Frequently Asked Questions

Our products

What is Nilotica shea butter?

Nilotica shea butter is a rare variety of shea butter from East Africa. Naturally softer, creamier and richer in oleic acid than West African shea butter, it melts easily on contact with the skin and leaves a softer, more comfortable and less heavy finish.

How is Nilotica shea butter different from regular shea butter?

Regular shea butter is often firmer, waxier and slower to apply. Nilotica shea butter has a naturally softer, more melting texture. A small amount spreads easily, making it suitable for the face, body, lips, hands, hair and dry areas.

Are your products natural?

Yes. Our skincare is created with a simple, pure and natural approach. Our Nilotica shea butter contains no artificial additives, no added preservatives and no synthetic fragrance.

Do your products contain fragrance?

No. We do not add synthetic fragrance. Nilotica shea butter has a naturally soft, light scent that fades quickly after application.

Are your products tested on animals?

No. RainforestCosme products are not tested on animals.

Which skin types are your products suitable for?

Nilotica shea butter is suitable for most skin types, including dry, normal, combination and sensitive skin. It is especially appreciated when the skin feels dry, uncomfortable or in need of softness.

Can I use Nilotica shea butter on my face?

Yes. Thanks to its soft, melting texture, it can be used on the face in a very small amount, ideally on slightly damp skin. A pea-sized amount is enough to nourish dry or uncomfortable areas.

Can I use it on my hair?

Yes. Nilotica shea butter can be used on dry ends, hair lengths or as a pre-shampoo treatment. Its softer texture makes it easier to apply than conventional shea butter.

Questions

Product and origin

What is Nilotica shea butter?
Nilotica shea butter is the soft, creamy butter obtained from the East African shea tree, Vitellaria paradoxa subsp. nilotica. RainforestCosme offers it as a 100% single-ingredient cosmetic with no added fragrance, water or fillers.

Direct link

Where does RainforestCosme Nilotica shea butter come from?
It is produced in Uganda from East African Nilotica shea nuts, then handcrafted and quality-controlled in Toulouse, France. Batch analyses are carried out in a laboratory in Bordeaux.

Direct link

What is the ingredient list?
One ingredient: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, obtained from Vitellaria paradoxa subsp. nilotica. It contains no added perfume, water, colourant or preservative.

Direct link

Is it raw and unrefined?
Yes. RainforestCosme Nilotica shea butter is sold as pure, raw and unrefined. Its natural colour, scent and texture can vary slightly from one harvest to another.

Direct link

What does Nilotica smell like?
It has a light natural scent that is generally subtler than classic unrefined West African shea butter. The scent usually fades after application.

Direct link

Why can colour or texture vary between batches?
Nilotica is a natural, unrefined ingredient. Harvest, temperature and natural composition can produce small variations without changing its intended cosmetic use.

Direct link

What makes it different

Is Nilotica naturally soft at room temperature?
Yes. It is naturally softer than classic shea butter and may become very creamy or partly liquid in a warm room. This is a physical change, not automatically a sign of spoilage.

Direct link

Is Nilotica just a raw ingredient?
No. It can be used as a cosmetic raw material, but its naturally soft, elegant texture also makes it suitable as a finished one-ingredient daily care ritual for skin, lips, hair and dry areas.

Direct link

Using it on skin

How should I apply Nilotica shea butter to the skin?
Warm a pea-sized amount between clean fingertips, then press or massage it onto the skin. Start small: more can always be added.

Direct link

Can I use Nilotica on my face?
Yes, a very small amount can be used on the face as an emollient. Patch-test first, especially if your skin is reactive or acne-prone, and avoid the eye area.

Direct link

Can I use it on my lips?
Yes. Apply a trace amount to dry lips as a simple one-ingredient lip-care ritual. For external use only.

Direct link

Can it be used for massage?
Yes. Its low melting point and slip make it suitable for massage. Warm a small quantity between the hands and add more gradually.

Direct link

Can I use it on hands, feet and nails?
Yes. Massage a small amount into dry hands, heels, cuticles or nails. It is especially practical as an overnight treatment for very dry areas.

Direct link

Hair

Can I use Nilotica shea butter on hair?
Yes. Use a trace amount on dry lengths and ends, or as a pre-shampoo treatment. Fine hair generally needs less product than thick, curly or very dry hair.

Direct link

Will Nilotica make my hair greasy?
Not necessarily. Greasiness usually comes from using too much or applying it too close to the scalp. Start with less than a pea-sized amount on lengths and ends, then adjust to your hair density and porosity.

Direct link

How long should I leave it on before shampooing?
Start with 20 to 30 minutes on the lengths and ends. Very dry hair may benefit from a longer treatment, but more time and more product are not always better.

Direct link

Can I leave a little Nilotica in my hair?
Yes. Rub a trace between the fingertips and smooth it over dry ends or flyaways. Use the smallest possible amount, especially on fine hair.

Direct link

Is it suitable for curly or textured hair?
Yes. Its soft texture makes it easy to distribute over curls, coils and dry ends. The correct amount depends on density, porosity and the finish you want.

Direct link

Make-up and fragrance

Can I use Nilotica as a perfume base?
A very thin layer on pulse points can give fragrance an emollient base on dry skin. Apply the butter first, then perfume, and check compatibility on a small area.

Direct link

Storage

Does Nilotica shea butter need refrigeration?
Usually no. Store it tightly closed in a cool, dry, dark cupboard. Refrigeration is only a temporary option during extreme heat and may make the texture much firmer.

Direct link

What if my Nilotica arrives melted?
Melting during hot weather is normal for this low-melting butter. Keep the container upright, let it return gradually to a cool room temperature and avoid repeated heating and cooling.

Direct link

Why can shea butter become grainy?
Graininess can develop when different natural fats crystallise at different rates after temperature fluctuations. The grains melt on skin and do not necessarily indicate spoilage.

Direct link

How long can I use the 125 ml tube after opening?
Use the 125 ml tube within 6 months after opening, as indicated by the period-after-opening symbol, and keep the cap clean and closed.

Direct link

Safety

Is RainforestCosme Nilotica shea butter for external use only?
Yes. It is a cosmetic product for external use. Do not ingest it.

Direct link

Should I patch-test it?
Yes, especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin. Apply a small amount to a limited area and wait before broader use. Stop using it if irritation develops.

Direct link

Can I use it around the eyes?
Avoid direct contact with the eyes. If product enters the eyes, rinse carefully with clean water.

Formats

What RainforestCosme formats are available?
RainforestCosme offers a 125 ml aluminium cosmetic tube for daily rituals, a 1 kg jar for frequent use, massage, spa or small-batch formulation, and a Duo pairing the two formats. Availability can vary by market.

Direct link

Is the butter in the tube the same as in the jar?
Both formats contain 100% Nilotica shea butter. The packaging and intended convenience differ; natural batch and temperature variations can slightly affect appearance or texture.

Direct link

Which format is best for personal use?
Choose the 125 ml tube for portable, controlled daily application. Choose the 1 kg jar for regular body, hair, massage or multi-person use. The Duo combines both formats in one purchase.

Direct link

Why RainforestCosme

Is Nilotica a multipurpose cosmetic?
Yes. One ingredient can support several rituals: face, lips, body, hands, feet, nails, hair ends, pre-shampoo, massage and after-shave care. Use small amounts and adapt the method to the area.

Direct link

What makes RainforestCosme different?
RainforestCosme specialises in Nilotica rather than treating it as ordinary commodity shea butter. The focus is provenance, quality control, a minimal one-ingredient formula and versatile daily rituals.

Direct link

Is RainforestCosme Nilotica fragranced?
No fragrance is added. Any scent comes naturally from the raw, unrefined butter and normally fades after application.
